content writing tips – ideas to engage the reader
A unique and eye-catching
design is only part of the story. To communicate effectively
with your target audience you also need to pay attention
to the newsletter content, the writing style, choice
of imagery and consistent use of branding. These top
tips aim to guide you through every aspect the company
newsletter writing process.
Company news is always more eye-catching
and reader-friendly when there is a human interest angle.
And while not all articles are going to appeal to all
readers, a ‘common denominator’ approach
will help ensure that the majority of content interests
most readers.
Suggestions for regular features
for a staff newsletter to build recognition and loyalty
include:
1. News
in Brief: For example; progress reports
on the work of the company around the country, new information
available to the public/company staff; recent awards/accreditations
made, new initiatives launched, etc.
2. Diary
Dates: Relevant events, training courses,
etc.
3. Going
the extra mile: Featuring positive feedback
from external organisations for the work of company
employees who have overcome difficult obstacles or demonstrated
customer service excellence, for example.
4. A
day in the life of…: A regular
feature profiling an individual within the company;
a project team working on a specific initiative (eg
Green Travel); or a department (to share ideas, work
methods and best practice ideas - and also demonstrate
how work contributes to the business objectives of the
company).
5. Bright
sparks/vox pops: A regular spot asking
staff for new ideas on ways to improve or simplify work
processes, customer service delivery, etc. This could
be run in conjunction with an internal employee incentive
scheme (celebrating innovation and promoting best practice
among staff members).
6. Look
who’s talking: Putting questions
to a senior person within the company to reveal his
or her personal side.
7. Charity
round-up: A brief look at the charitable
activities of staff within the company or work that
the company has sponsored.
8. Competition
Spot: Could be a crossword, wordsearch,
photo caption, quiz, for variety.
