How to design a brochure – brochure design tips

A brochure is as important and basic a tool as your business card. Here are some simple tips to make sure it is a good one.

Keep the text short and to the point – leave the reader wanting to learn more about your company
Assume the reader knows nothing about your business – don’t forget to communicate the most important fundamentals about your products or services
Convey the impression that yours is a solid, reliable company and therefore its products must be equally as good, solid and reliable – your brochure should be a corner stone in building trust with your prospective customers.

A brochure will give customers a visual feel for who you are and what you do. The type and style of photography or imagery is an essential part of creating an identity. Photography is a really strong way to reinforce a message, with a fresh, immediate and emotional impact.

Choosing a brochure format
Brochures can work effectively both in printed and electronic formats and there are advantages to each. Here is a summary to help you choose the most appropriate format for your needs.

Format

Advantages

• Eye-catching, immediate, ‘demands’ attention
• Once print version is created, a PDF can be placed on website with little extra cost

Disadvantages

• Costs will limit number of pages/amount of information
• More costly to update

• Can include more information/more pages
• Cost-effective to update regularly
• Convenient to print out
• Emailable
• Can include hyperlinks

• A4 brochure format does not fit on screen
• Cannot use double-page spreads: must be laid out as single pages only

• Screen friendly format, easy to read
• Can contain lots more information, with navigation links
• Cost-effective to update regularly
• Can email a hyperlink to the site

• ‘Pull’ communication – people need to seek it out
• Each page would need to be printed out individually
